Sida platycalyx is a potentially useful taxon for mining rehabilitation. It produces plenty of viable seed which may be collected as woody fruit from the ground. Seeds may stay in the fruit from where they will freely germinate after rain. Generally, it has been difficult to produce native ground flora for mining rehabilitation and yet there is clearly an opportunity here. Other Sida spp. are also of interest to us for the same reason, with unambiguously native species our priority focus. We documented Sida platycalyx north west of Mount Isa in the plant community 1.5.4d: Eucalyptus leucophylla low open woodland with Corymbia terminalis on red earths. The specimens photographed had declined after a heavy growth and fruiting period so we hope to capture additional photography during the next wet season.
Mostly occurs around inland arid and semi arid regions of Western Australia, Northern Territory, Queensland and New South Wales.
