Scientific NamePomax umbellata
CategoriesProstrate ShrubSubshrub
Common Name(s)Pomax
FamilyRubiaceae

Description

"Erect to spreading subshrub to 40 cm high;..." (PlantNet)

Notes

Pomax umbellata grows on lighter soils and we most commonly encounter the plants around Corymbia citriodora dominant, eucalypt forest where a general lack of competition on the forest floor allows for their success. The seed has been developed and used for rehabilitation work in NSW by at least one company. Our attempts to harvest it show that while the seed is certainly manageable that it will be costly to produce from wild areas in any significant quantity. This process would also place unnecessary pressure on areas which are already experiencing degradation of ecological values by invasive weeds, particularly grasses. Pomax umbellata is included here because we anticipate cultivating plants to produce seed. This process will remain costly however less so than wild collection.

Historical Notes

Distribution

Pomax umbellata occurs along the eastern Australian coast and adjacent inland from around Melbourne to Cairns, reaching up to 600km inland. However, it also occurs in arid regions of South Australia, Central Australia and into Western Australia towards the Little Sandy Desert.
