Notes

It is unlikely that seed from Indigofera linnaei has been produced for rehabilitation works. It appears that seed production from such a plant will be very limited in terms of kilograms per unit of time spent. However, the Indigofera genus has much to offer in our work and so the taxon is included here for completeness and in the hope that commercialisation of the seed may occur in the future. Cultivation may be an option for such a subject.

A notable occurrence of Indigofera linnaei that we observe nearby grows on a loamy granite wash which has formed from a massive grey granite rock unit. At the time of writing there has been considerable rain for some months and the seasonal rain is well above average. Here, there exists ironbark woodland with dense native grass and legume ground cover. In this season and in this location, Indigofera linnaei is a dominant legume exceeded only by Glycine spp.

The distribution of this plant suggests broad applicability for rehabilitation. Native ground covering legumes are much under-represented and therefore much needed as new introductions.

Indigofera linnaei has toxic effects on horses which consume it. The ill-effects apparently do not extend to sheep, cattle, or goats. This subject is covered in an article by the late Donald Simpson, author of, “Some Magnetic Island Plants”. Donald’s excellent work is available online and a link is provided below covering the subject at hand.

Historical Notes

Distribution

Indigofera linnaei is widely distributed across Queensland, Northern Territory, the northern half of West Australia and the northern most part of South Australia and New South Wales.
