Hovea apiculata

Scientific NameHovea apiculata
CategoriesNitrogen FixerShrub
Common Name(s)
FamilyFabaceae

Description

Shrub to 3 m tall; indumentum ± grey, the hairs coiled. (Flora of Australia)

Notes

"Usually readily recognisable by the racemose inflorescences and the insertion of the bracteoles on the calyx tube. Similar in leaf morphology to Hovea lanceolata, which has a similar distribution, but the latter, as well as differing in the above characters, has a longer calyx and a much more sparsely haired pod at maturity." (Flora of Australia) Hovea apiculata is much less prevalent in Queensland than in New South Wales. Herbarium data shows occurrences in a number of conservation areas such as Beeron National Park besides in private grazing and state forest areas. The seed has been produced in New South Wales where it is far more prevalent and we'd advise against any seed collection from stands within Queensland unless it were minimal and to be used for building seed through cultivation.

Please refer to other Hovea species here such as Hovea lorata for notes on seed collection etc.

Historical Notes

Distribution

"Occurs in south-eastern Qld from Expedition Range National Park south-east to Boondooma homestead and, disjunctly, just north of the Qld–N.S.W. border on Jibbinbah Mountain; in north-eastern N.S.W. it occurs inland, from the N.S.W.–Qld border south to Dubbo." (Flora of Australia)
