Queensland Native Seeds

Alstonia constricta

Scientific NameAlstonia constricta
CategoriesShrubTree
Common Name(s)Bitter Bark
FamilyApocynaceae

Description

"Tree to 15 m high." (Flora of Australia)

Notes

"A pioneer species in vine thickets and vine forests or in open forests and woodlands." (Flora of Australia)

Alstonia constricta appears in a great many plant communities and would very highly useable across rehabilitation sites in Queensland. However the seed falls quickly and during Novemeber and December when Acacia species are often productive, and so it has been hard to orchestrate collections to date. The seed is light and papery and dehisces quickly from long, green pods. Fair quantities of seed can be produced in good years.

For seed collectors who may attempt this collection, be careful around the milky sap which contains alkaloid neurotoxins. Eye protection and safety gloves would be a minimum requirement.

Historical Notes

Distribution

"Widespread in coastal and inland southern Qld and northeastern N.S.W." (Flora of Australia)
