Acacia phlebocarpa

Scientific NameAcacia phlebocarpa
CategoriesNitrogen FixerProstrate ShrubShrubWattle
Common Name(s)
FamilyFabaceae, Subfamily Mimosoideae

Description

Flat-topped shrub 0.4–2 m tall. (WorldWideWattle ver. 2)

Notes

Grows on shallow stony and sandy soils or deep lateritic soil in low open woodland or with Triodia spp. (WorldWideWattle ver. 2)

Acacia phlebocarpa would be a most valuable rehabilitation subject because it covers ground well, protecting it from erosion, and providing excellent habitat for fauna in what will often be a hot, open space overseen by avian predators. We will need more experience with this taxon before drawing conclusions. We recently failed to collect the seed efficiently because it appeared to have produce scant pods in a highly sequential fashion, there never being a significant quantity of ripe pods to gather at once. Furthermore, like several other Acacia spp. in the region, it is resinous which further decreases the economics of seed collection. Nonetheless, problems can often be solved with some patience and careful observation.

Historical Notes

Distribution

Occurs principally in NW Qld, especially in Mount Isa area, and adjacent N.T. but with outlying populations in northern W.A. on and near Tableland Stn. (WorldWideWattle ver. 2)
