CategoriesNitrogen FixerShrubTreeWattle
Common Name(s)
FamilyFabaceae, Subfamily Mimosoidea

Description

Slender erect tree to 10 m high. (WorldWideWattle, ver.2)

We have recorded Acacia pedleyi, north of Biloela, Qld, in a Eucalyptus moluccana and Corymbia citriodora woodland. The small trees were in close proximity to Acacia decora and Acacia polifolia on sandy loam derived from sandstone. The seed was of interest to the adjacent coal mine where extensive rehabilitation works were underway.

Notes

Grows in red loamy soil on slopes and ridge tops, in open eucalypt forest or woodland. (WorldWideWattle, ver.2)

Historical Notes

Acacia pedleyi was named after Les Pedley (1930 - 2018). Les made a large contribution to and was very important to plant taxonomy. An Australian National Botanical Garden article from which the following quotes are taken is well worth reading. A link is provided at the bottom of this page.

"Most of Les's working life was spent at the Queensland Herbarium where he undertook taxonomic research into Australian legumes and in particular the genus Acacia. Les formally described over 180 plant species new to science, most of these from Queensland, and contributed over 4000 specimens to the Queensland Herbarium collections." (Australian National Botanical Garden)

Distribution

Endemic to the Callide and Calliope Ranges, Port Curtis District, Qld. (WorldWideWattle, ver.2)
